I received Ph.D (2009) in Biochemistry, and the research work was on identifying therapeutics from natural sources for insulin resistance employing animal model. My current research area is Nutrition and dietary based interventional studies in preventing/treating age-related and lifestyle diseases with special emphasis on diabetic complications. We revealed the effect of obesity on the brain Ubiquitin-Proteasome System and its possible underlying mechanisms in neurodegeneration including modulation of Endoplasmic Reticulum (ER) Stress. Added, we demonstrated the beneficiary outcome of dietary restriction in obesity on neurodegeneration. We performed exploratory studies on the role of Ubiquitin-Proteasome System and ER Stress in the development of diabetic complications like retinopathy and myopathy. The pathological role of ER stress in diabetic myopathy was studied in type-I diabetes. Further 4-PBA, a well-known ER stress inhibitor was proved to avert diabetic muscle wasting in streptozotocin-induced diabetic rat. Currently, work is in progress to decipher the potential role of few nutrients and dietary ingredients in preventing diabetic complications using in vitro and in vivo models.
