The researchers at this division aim to build evidence on various nutrition sensitive and nutrition specific factors that can improve undernutrition among the vulnerable segments of the population. The division has carried out or carrying out various intervention studies in the states of Jharkhand (nutrition and health education through poshan sakhi), Telangana (micronutrient and Iron Folic acid (IFA) supplementation, KCR-kit) and Andhra Pradesh (Community based convergent approach) that address undernutrition and anemia among under 5 children, pregnant women and adolescent girls. The division has a 1000 children cohort who have been followed up from the time of pregnancy and is looking after the various factors that determine undernutrition in the first 1000 days of life. The division has recently evaluated the impact evaluation of Karnataka Multisectoral Nutrition Pilot Project in Karnataka and is currently carrying out comprehensive national nutrition health survey on a pilot basis in Nalgonda district.
The other core areas of research of division include the role of diet in rheumatoid arthritis, iron supplementation (IFA and iron biofortified millet) on anemia and gut microbiome. The researchers of the division are closely associated with MRHRU (Chandragiri) and MDRU (SV Medical College, Tirupati and Gandhi Medical College, Hyderabad) as a part of capacity building. A new project is being planned at MRHRU, Chandragiri on assessment of adequate intakes (AI) in health population for updating the Dietary Reference Intakes (DRIs) for Indians.
