Established in India in 1957, for spreading knowledge on the Care, Breeding, Management and Experimentation using laboratory animals in biomedical research in the country. Later shifted to National Institute of Nutrition (NIN), Hyderabad in 1976 to provide animal support to NIN’s nutritional research and also to provide animals to other institutes. The facility consists: the experimental animal facility, the feed preparation facility, the breeding and maintenance facility and check the health and genetic integrity of laboratory animals under its care. The laboratory animals bred, maintained and used for experimentation in various research institutions in the country. Laboratory animals’ diet preparation and regularly undertakes supply of laboratory animal feed (both maintenance and experimental) special diets like high fat, high protein, iron deficient, vitamin deficient diets preparation as per the end user experimental needs as per their required diet composition. and check the health and genetic integrity of laboratory animals under its care. The research activities focus on development of animal models, clinical studies, biochemical, immunological & molecular investigations, diet-gene interactions and associated molecular mechanisms.
The Division also conducts the following regular training programmes annually both at the junior (4 weeks duration) and senior level (2 months duration) for laboratory animal personnel working in government and private biomedical institutions / establishments. Apart from this, need based ad-hoc training courses of shorter duration are also offered.
1. LATTC – Laboratory Animal Technician Training Course (EQ: 10 th & Intermediate)
2. LASTC - Laboratory Animal Supervisor Training Course (EQ: Graduation, Masters, Doctoral degree in biological sciences)
3. Ad-hoc training course as per the need of end user (EQ: Graduation, Masters, Doctoral degree in biological sciences)
